# Vending machine dimensions: cabinet sizes and the floor space you give up

> The spec sheet lists the cabinet, but your floor plan has to hold the cabinet, the air gap behind it, the customer in front and the swinging door.

Vending machine dimensions from spec sheets: full-size snack, drink and combo machines are 72 inches tall, 33 to 47 inches wide, 32 to 38 inches deep and roughly 500 to 700 pounds. A 4-inch gap behind refrigerated models and a 30-by-48-inch clear space in front bring each to about 20 square feet, twice its cabinet.

## What are standard vending machine dimensions?

Standard full-size vending machines stand 72 inches tall and measure 33 to 47 inches wide and 32 to 38 inches deep in current spec sheets from Crane and AMS. Width varies most, because makers sell the same cabinet in narrow and wide versions: Crane's BevMax Classic drink machine comes 40 or 47 inches wide, and its Merchant snack machine 33 or 44 inches.

Royal Vendors calls 35.5 by 37 inches a "standard footprint" for its glass-front Vision Vendor, according to the [Royal Vendors site](https://www.royalvendors.com/), which sits inside the ranges above. Compact cabinets trade capacity for floor space: the AMS SlimGem, a three-wide snack merchandiser, is 28.5 inches wide and 29.5 inches deep.

Footprints sort fairly cleanly by type. [PinPoint Vending's breakdown of the six main machine types](https://pinpoint-vending.com/blog/types-of-vending-machines) gives about 3 feet of width for a snack machine and 3 to 4 feet for a drink or combo cabinet, a compact kiosk for specialty impulse machines, and a wall or a room for a micro market. [Its list of 13 machines with 2026 dealer prices](https://pinpoint-vending.com/blog/best-vending-machines-to-buy) adds cabinet dimensions for one common model, the Crane National 157 at 72 by 38 by 35 inches and about 655 pounds, which is the weight that decides whether a doorway, a floor or a lift can take it.

Robotic machines are a different class. Sweet Robo's cotton candy robot is 52.8 inches wide and 95.3 inches tall, and its ice cream robot is 47.2 inches deep and 96.5 inches tall; both stand about 2 feet taller than a standard 72-inch cabinet. Their size matters if you are offered one: 80 of the 87 listings open on [PinPoint Vending's marketplace](https://pinpoint-vending.com/marketplace) on October 5, 2026 are for cotton candy machines.

## How much floor space does a vending machine take in total?

A vending machine takes its cabinet footprint plus two permanent clearances: an air gap behind refrigerated models and a clear floor space in front for customers. Added together, the machines in the table commit roughly 15 to 22 square feet each, about double the cabinet's own area and more for compact cabinets, before counting the walkway past them or the door swing on service days.

| Machine (example model) | Cabinet only | With 4-in rear gap | Plus 30-by-48-in clear floor space |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact snack (AMS SlimGem) | 5.8 sq ft | Not refrigerated | 15.8 sq ft |
| Snack (Crane Merchant 6 Ambient) | 11.5 sq ft | Not refrigerated | 21.5 sq ft |
| Combo (Crane Merchant 6 Combo) | 10.2 sq ft | 11.5 sq ft | 21.5 sq ft |
| Glass-front drink, narrow (BevMax Classic) | 9.3 sq ft | 10.4 sq ft | 20.4 sq ft |
| Glass-front drink, wide (BevMax Classic) | 10.9 sq ft | 12.2 sq ft | 22.2 sq ft |
| Claw machine (Toy Chest XL 31) | 6.7 sq ft | Not refrigerated | 16.7 sq ft |
| Cotton candy robot (Sweet Robo) | 10.8 sq ft | Not refrigerated | 20.8 sq ft |
| Ice cream robot (Sweet Robo) | 11.2 sq ft | 12.2 sq ft | 22.2 sq ft |

The table multiplies each spec sheet's width by its depth. For refrigerated machines it adds a 4-inch gap behind the cabinet, the minimum [Royal Vendors' manual](https://www.royalvendors.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/rvvngpccd.pdf) sets for its Royal Vision Vender, applied here to other refrigerated makes as an assumption. It then adds the 30-by-48-inch clear floor space, 10 square feet, that section 305.3 of the [2010 ADA Standards](https://www.ada.gov/law-and-regs/design-standards/2010-stds/) requires in front of the controls.

The cabinet is the number in the sales pitch. The last column is the number for your floor plan. It is also the real price of a [free vending machine placement](https://locationsforvending.com/get-vending-machine-for-business/).

## How much room should you leave behind and beside a vending machine?

Leave at least 4 inches between the back of a refrigerated vending machine and the wall, the minimum Royal Vendors sets in its Vision Vender manual so the refrigeration system can ventilate, and leave working room on the side where the door hinges. In a 2000 service note, Royal [recommends spacing its GIII machines 14.5 inches apart](https://www.royalvendors.com/customer-service/technical-info/helpful-hints/) so a technician can reach the last column on the hinge side.

Corners need the most thought. A hinge side pushed flush against a wall can stop the door before it opens far enough to pull a tray or reach that last column, so ask which side the door hinges on before you pick the corner, and turn the hinge side toward open floor.

Pushing a machine flat against the wall to win back 4 inches defeats the ventilation the manual asks for. Other makers publish their own clearance figures, so ask for the installation page of the manual for the exact model you are getting.

## How much space does a vending machine need in front?

A vending machine needs a clear floor space, 30 by 48 inches at minimum, facing its controls under section 305.3 of the 2010 ADA Standards, and the vending company needs room to swing the door open on service visits. A zone 48 inches deep in front of the machine covers both a forward-approach wheelchair space and the swing of a door up to 48 inches wide.

That 48-inch zone is Spare Corner's rule of thumb, not a code requirement. A door hinged on one side sweeps an arc about as deep as the door is wide; assume the front door spans most of the cabinet, and a 47-inch door needs roughly 47 inches of clear floor to open square. The reach ranges, alcove rules and approach options are in [vending machine ADA requirements](https://locationsforvending.com/vending-machine-ada-requirements/).

The walkway past the machine must keep at least 36 inches of clear width (section 403.5.1). In workplaces, OSHA requires exit access to be at least 28 inches wide at all points ([29 CFR 1910.36](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.36)) and bars any equipment, placed permanently or temporarily, from an exit route ([29 CFR 1910.37](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.37)). Your local fire marshal can confirm the corridor widths that apply to your building.

## Will a vending machine fit through your door?

A vending machine fits through a door only if its narrowest side, usually its depth, is less than the door's clear opening. The 2010 ADA Standards require at least 32 inches of clear width at doorways on accessible routes (section 404.2.3), while the full-size machines in the table run 32 to 38 inches deep, so measure every opening on the delivery path before delivery day.

Measure the clear opening, not the door. Section 404.2.3 measures clear width between the face of the door, open 90 degrees, and the stop, which is narrower than the door leaf itself. The ice cream robot is the exception to the depth rule: its narrowest side is its 34.3-inch width.

Height and weight matter on the same walk. The two robots stand 95.3 and 96.5 inches tall, so check door heights, ceiling soffits and elevator cabs along the route. Crane's full-size cabinets weigh 493 to 688 pounds and the ice cream robot about 1,058 pounds, so ask about stairs, ramps, elevator capacity and, on an upper floor or mezzanine, the floor's load rating.

Product adds weight once the machine is full. A wide BevMax holds 360 bottles of 20 ounces, according to Crane; at about 1.3 pounds of liquid per bottle, that is roughly 470 pounds on top of the cabinet's 688, or close to 1,160 pounds in all. Keep your route measurements for the day the machine leaves, too: [moving a machine out](https://locationsforvending.com/remove-vending-machine-from-business/) at the end of an agreement follows the same path in reverse.

## How does power limit where a vending machine can go?

Power limits where a vending machine can go as much as floor area does, because the spot must sit within cord's reach of the right outlet. Royal's Vision Vender manual calls for a grounded outlet on a dedicated circuit with at least 15-amp service and rules out extension cords unless a certified electrician approves one, so a corner with no suitable outlet nearby is not a ready corner.

Current draw varies by machine type. Crane lists 3 amps for its ambient Merchant snack machines, 6 amps for the refrigerated Merchant combo and 7.5 amps for the current BevMax Classic (10.2 amps for the older R134a version, per its sell sheet); Sweet Robo rates its cotton candy robot at 20 amps on a 110-volt supply and its ice cream robot at 25.

Circuit sizing is an electrician's call. [Vending machine electrical requirements](https://locationsforvending.com/vending-machine-electrical-requirements/) explains what to brief them on, and [how much electricity a vending machine uses](https://locationsforvending.com/vending-machine-electricity-use/) covers what the machine adds to your bill.

## What should you check before you agree to a spot?

Before you agree to a spot, check it against the machine you will actually get, using that model's spec sheet and manual rather than a typical size. A tape measure and the operator's model number answer most of the questions that otherwise surface on delivery day, when the machine is already on a truck outside your door.

- Ask for the model's spec sheet with width, depth, height and weight.
- Ask for the manual's installation page and its rear-clearance figure.
- Ask which side the door hinges on, and keep that side clear.
- Measure the spot: cabinet depth plus the rear gap, plus 48 inches clear in front.
- Measure the walkway past the machine: at least 36 inches clear.
- Keep the machine out of every exit route.
- Measure the narrowest door on the delivery path against the machine's depth.
- Check door and ceiling heights along the route if the machine is a robot.
- Confirm a grounded outlet within cord's reach, with no extension cord.
- Ask the building owner about floor load on an upper floor or mezzanine.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the standard size of a vending machine?

Full-size snack, drink and combo machines from Crane and AMS stand 72 inches tall and are 33 to 47 inches wide and 32 to 38 inches deep, according to the makers' current spec sheets. Compact models run narrower, such as the 28.5-inch-wide AMS SlimGem.

### How much space do you need for a vending machine?

Plan on roughly 15 to 22 square feet per machine: the cabinet, a 4-inch air gap behind refrigerated models and a 30-by-48-inch clear floor space in front. The walkway past the machine must also stay at least 36 inches wide under the 2010 ADA Standards.

### How much does a vending machine weigh?

Crane lists its full-size snack, combo and drink machines at 493 to 688 pounds before any product goes in. Robotic machines are heavier: Sweet Robo lists 380 kg, about 838 pounds, for its cotton candy robot and 480 kg, about 1,058 pounds, for its ice cream robot.

### How far from the wall should a vending machine be?

Royal Vendors' manual for its Royal Vision Vender calls for at least 4 inches between the back of the machine and the wall so the refrigeration system can ventilate. Other makers publish their own figures, so ask the operator for the installation page of the manual for the exact model.

### Will a vending machine fit through a standard door?

Only if the machine's narrowest side, usually its depth, is less than the door's clear opening. Accessible doorways must give at least 32 inches of clear width, while full-size machines run about 32 to 38 inches deep, so measure the narrowest opening on the delivery path before the truck arrives.

## Next step

Mark the spot on your floor with tape at full size, cabinet, rear gap and front zone included, and walk past it at your busiest hour; if it still works, send the operator your measurements and ask it to confirm the model fits before delivery.
